(ENG) Epipedobates tricolor is a species of poison dart frog. The female places the eggs in leaf litter and the male waits to develop them as tadpoles. Afterwards the tadpoles attach to the father's back, who carries them to running water. (ESP) Epipedobates tricolor es una especie de rana flecha venenosa. La hembra pone los huevos en la hojarasca y el macho los cuida hasta que se desarrollan en renacuajos, los renacuajos se suben a la espalda de su padre que los transporta a cursos de agua corriente.

(ENG) Hyalinobatrachium aureoguttatum is a Centrolenidae, a glass frog from Chocó area. It's so transparent that you can see through its tissue and observe its heart beating and pumping blood into the arteries. (ESP) Hyalinobatrachium aureoguttatum es un Centrolénido, una rana de cristal de la zona del Chocó. Es tan transparente que puedes ver a través de sus tejidos y observar su corazón latiendo y bombear sangre por sus arterias.

(ENG) Gastrotheca riobambae, the Andean marsupial frog, has an interesting strategy: the mother inserts the impregnated eggs in a special bag under the skin of her back (you can appreciate the bulges in this picture). The eggs develop to tadpoles inside and when it’s the right time, the mother gives birth to the tadpoles. This way her offspring is safe during the first stages of their life cycle. (ESP) Gastrotheca riobambae, la rana marsupial andina, tiene una estrategia interesante, la madre introduce los huevos ya fecundados en una bolsa especial debajo de la piel de su espalda (puedes observar los bultitos en esta fotografía). Los huevos se desarrollan dentro de esa bolsa en renacuajos, y cuando están listos, la madre da a luz a renacuajos ya formados, de esta forma asegura protección a su descendencia en los primeros estadios de su ciclo vital.

(ESP) las rana flecha venenosas, como la Ranitomeya ventrimaculata de la foto, secretan veneno gracias a unas glándulas en su piel, pero este veneno solo se produce si la rana se alimenta de un tipo específico de ácaro, sin esa comida la rana no puede producir esas toxinas, por este motivo las ranas flechas criadas en cautividad no secretan veneno.

(ENG) Good ponds are a precious value for male frogs of some species, because from that place they would sing attracting females and reproduce. But sometimes a pond is coveted by several males, when this happens they will fight to define the owner of the place. When I first saw this two males fighting I took this picture and waited to see the winner, finally the frog in the top strangulated the one in the bottom, it took several minutes for this frog to recover, coming slowly back to life, siting, and leaving the pond while the other male started to sing. (ESP) Las charcas buenas tienen un valor inimaginable para los machos de algunas especies de ranas, desde ese punto podrán cantar para atraer a las hembras y así poder reproducirse. Pero en ocasiones una misma charca es codiciada por varios machos, cuando esto sucede luchan para ver quién es el dueño del sitio. Cuando ví a estos dos machos luchando tome esta foto, y esperé para ver cuál era el ganador, al final el macho que está arriba estrangulo al que está abajo, le llevo varios minutos recuperarse, volver a revivir, sentarse, y abandonar la charca mientras el otro macho ya comenzaba a cantar.

"Diablito" the Devil's frog (Oophaga sylvatica)

(ENG) Oophaga sylvatica is a polymorphic frog. It has a wide range of color variations, the one in the picture has an intense red color, which is only one possible variation of many. It is found in Colombia and Northwest Ecuador, but the populations in Ecuador are disappearing due to habitat loss. (ESP) Oophaga sylvatica es una rana polimórfica, tiene una enorme variación de tonalidades, la de la foto es roja intensa, pero solo es una variación de muchas. Se encuentra en Colombia y el noroeste de Ecuador pero las poblaciones de Ecuador están desapareciendo por culpa de la perdida de habitat.

(ENG) This glass frog is a male of Spadarana prosoblepon. Males have two humeral spines, these are blue sharp bones in the shoulders, used to fight with other males for a leaf well placed over the stream. This kind of leaf are the perfect spot to sing and attract the females for reproduction. (ESP) Esta rana de cristal es un macho de Spadarana prosoblepon, los machos tienen dos espinas humerales, estas son huesos de color azul que salen de los hombros. Ellos usan estas espinas para combatir con otros machos por una hoja que esté bien situada sobre el arrollo, desde la que poder cantar y atraer a la hembra a copular.

(ENG) One night I found a pond with a male singing, so I decided to record the sound. Soon after I was checking the recorded chant just two steps away of the pond, I realized the male in the pond had started to respond to the recording device. He was competing against himself, fighting with the voice against its own recorded sound. (ESP) Una noche me encontré con un sapo cantando en una charca, decidí grabarlo y poco después mientras comprobaba la grabación a solo unos pasos de la charca, me di cuenta de que el sapo de la charca estaba respondiendo a la grabadora, estaba compitiendo consigo mismo, usando la voz para luchar contra su propio canto.
