The nymph covers its body with waxy filaments secreted by specialized glands; the nymph feeds on plants fluids, but it can't assimilate the wax on the plant so it tends to accumulate this substance on the top of its body. This way the nymph gets protection as the predator will think that it is not a living animal and instead they will think it is bird excrement. If finally, the predator strikes, it is more likely to come away with the sticky wax in the mouth and not the body of the insect, the insect will jump away and escape. Note the eye and antenna. La ninfa recubre su cuerpo con unos filamentos céreos secretados por unas glándulas especializadas; la ninfa se alimenta de los fuidos de la planta pero no puede asimilar las ceras de estas, por ese motivo tiende a acumularlo sobre su cuerpo. De esta forma la larva obtiene dos cosas, por un lado simula a los ojos de un depredador ser algo inanimado, cómo excremento de pájaro. Si el depredador se decide a atacar es más probable que se lleve en la boca una masa de ceras pegajosas, y el insecto escape. Fíjate en el ojo y la antena.

There was a time when scientists thought that its function was to emit light, but actually that is a myth. (ESP) Los insectos linterna pertenecen a la familia Fulgoridae. Muchos de ellos tienen unas prolongaciones en la cabeza, que asemejan un hocico, este órgano puede tener formas muy extravagantes. Hubo un tiempo en el que los científicos pensaban que la función de dicho órgano era emitir luz, aunque la realidad es que eso solo es un mito.

(ESP) Diactor bilineatus, tiene una estrategia defensiva interesante, que consiste en tener las tibias de las patas traseras con unas ornamentaciones a modo de vistosas banderas, así si otro animal (por ejemplo un pájaro) le ataca, la parte más susceptible de ser mordida sería una de sus patas... y es mejor eso que ser comida.

(ENG) For three days I was camping close to the Colombian border, where I was able to observe this animal really closely. Close to my tent, everyday it climbed up to the same leaf and stood all day close to the red stuff. I couldn't figure out what those red things were, probably they are galls produced by mites, but sincerely I don't know. If the Hemiptera, probably an Alydidae, felt frightened due to my presence, he was hiding under the leaf and waited until I left him alone to climb up to the top of those red things again. (ESP) Durante tres días acampé cerca de la frontera con Colombia, podía ver este animal cerca de mi carpa, cada día subía a la misma hoja la cual estaba cubierta de unas bolitas rojas, y permanecía todo el día encima de la hoja. No pude comprender que eran aquellas cosas y porque parecía cuidarlas, podrían ser agallas producidas por ácaros o incluso un virus, pero la realidad es que no sé que eran. Si el hemíptera se sentía intimidado por mi presencia se escondía debajo de la hoja hasta que me hubiera marchado y volvía a subir para situarse encima de esas cosas rojas.

The froth serves a number of purposes. It hides the nymph from the view of predators and parasites, it insulates against heat and cold, thus providing thermal control and also moisture control; without the froth the insect would quickly dry up. The nymphs pierce plants and suck sap causing very little damage, much of the filtered fluids go into the production of the froth, which has an acrid taste, deterring predators. (ESP) Los saltahojas son miembros de la superfamilia Cercopoidea, son especialmente reconocibles por su estado de ninfa, la cual produce una cubierta de espuma a partir de savia succionada a la planta, por este motivo se les conocen como bicho-escupitajo. La espuma tiene varias funciones. Les da escondite frente a depredadores y parásitos, aísla a las ninfas frente a los cambios de temperatura, y controla la humedad, sin esta cubierta la ninfa se desecaría en poco tiempo. Las ninfas perforan la planta y chupa la savia, muchos de los fluidos van a la producción de esta espuma que tiene un sabor agrio, que es repulsivo para los depredadores.

If this animal is seen by a predator while flying, he will look for a red prey, but when it lands and close the wings it will camouflage by the coloration of the superior wings. Si el animal es visto en vuelo el depredador estará buscando una presa de color rojo, pero al posarse y cerrar las alas quedará oculto por la coloración disruptiva.

But occasionally some little fellow gets inside my kitchen, and I take advantage of the kitchen's white countertop. Pero en ocasiones, alguna pequeña criatura entra en mi cocina y yo tomo ventaja del color blanco de la encimera.

(ESP) Este insecto es un bicho asesino, dentro de la familia Reduviidae, puedes fijarte en su formidable probóscide (también llamada rostrum), una boca puntiaguda y afilada que utiliza para matar a sus víctimas y chupar sus fluidos. El que ves en la foto estaba listo para atacar a un pequeño saltamontes que había cerca, en la rama de abajo.

(ENG) This critter lived in a rotten trunk, where the action of xilophagus insects (that feed on wood) and the fungi hade made wood become sawdust. It’s even hard to belief that this is alive if it’s not moving, but actually it’s an Hemiptera, whose strategy consist on covering up its body with sawdust, plenty of sawdust. Inside the Reduviidae family there are these “masked hunter assassin bugs” that use this behavior to ambush their preys, and strike as in a horror movie. (ESP) Esta criatura vivía en un tronco que se empezaba a podrir, justo en la parte donde los hongos y la acción de muchos insectos xilófagos (que comen madera) había dejado el tronco hecho viruta o serrín. Cuesta creer que es un animal si no lo ves moverse, pero se trata de un hemíptero, cuya estrategia consiste en camuflarse con serrín, mucho serrín. Dentro de la familia Reduviidae hay unos "insectos asesinos enmascarados" que hacen esto para poder acechar a sus presas y tenderles emboscadas dignas de una película de terror.
