Ant falls in antlion trap

(ENG) One classic enemy of ants are antlions (larvae of Neuroptera inside family Myrmeleontidae). This creature in the left of the picture digs a hole in a sandy soil, a pitfall. Since the sides of the pit consists of loose sand at its angle of repose, they afford an insecure foothold to any small insects that inadvertently venture over the edge, such as ants. Slipping to the bottom, the prey is immediately attacked by the ferocious larva with its potent mandibles.
